警方堅稱，史考特手上握有槍枝對員警造成威脅，他們才開火攻擊。
夏洛特麥克倫堡警局局長：「儘管下令讓他放下槍枝，但史考特並沒有照辦，他走出來對警官造成威脅。」
但是史考特的家屬喊冤，說他手上只有書，沒有槍，目擊者也表示，一定是警方動了手腳。
目擊者：「警方掉包了，一定是這樣，他們把書拿走換了把槍。」
火爆抗議接連進行兩晚，期間還有1名民眾遭其他示威者流彈誤傷，情況危急，夏洛特當局已經宣佈進入緊急狀態，並開始清理示威現場，不管案情真相到底如何，接二連三發生非裔民眾遭槍殺，已經讓美國社會種族撕裂的傷口再度擴大。（民視新聞綜合報導）
